HAPPY HOUR: Head over to Civilian Art Projects tonight for a happy hour and to check out their ongoing Screams and Screens exhibit. It’s the best deal in town with booze from Peroni and silk-screened rock posters in a fine art gallery going for a steal at $20 to $200. 6 to 10 p.m.

ART: The Katzen Arts Center has an opening reception tonight for the 2009 Visual Arts Applicants’ Showcase. These artists are competing for $5000 Fellowships in the media and visual arts from the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities. 6:30 p.m.

READING: Kenji Jasper, aka. D, will be at the Olsson’s in Dupont Circle to read from Cake, the follow-up to his first novel, Got. 7 p.m.

MUSIC: Returning to the 9:30 Club for the second time this year are DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist. This time, the turntablists will be bringing along the Mighty Underdogs, who’ve been described as an underground hip-hop supergroup. $35, 8 p.m.
