If the Friday Evening Parade at the Marine Barracks in Southeast is something you enjoy in the summertime, the Examiner has a bittersweet tidbit of news for you: Chesty the XII, the English bulldog who has served as the official mascot of the barracks for the last six years, has retired from duty. Chesty officially handed the reins to his successor, Chesty the XIII, on Friday. Chesty the XII was the longest-serving of all the Chesties. Godspeed, XII!
Park Service Considering Draining Capitol Reflecting Pool: The National Park Service is weighing whether to drain the Capitol Reflecting Pool during the summer months to protect fowl from diseases. Avian botulism has killed more than 40 ducks at the reflecting pool in the last two weeks.
Fatal Shootings Overnight: Three people were fatally shot in two separate incidents overnight, and three other people were injured in other shootings. The Post details the crimes. All three fatal shootings took place in Southeast, and all but one of the non-fatal shootings also took place in Southeast, with one shooting in Northeast. Names of most of the victims have not yet been released, but NBC4 describes the most gruesome of the shootings, a double homicide in the 1700 Block of Q St. SE, as “execution-style.”
