Good morning, D.C. Are those of you who commute in on the Red line having fun yet? A small electrical fire at Metro Center early this morning shut down the station entirely for about 20 minutes, creating massive backups and delays as a result. WMATA says trains have been running normally on the Red line since 8:20 a.m., but we’ve been hearing the line was pretty much fubar for the morning commute. Commence your transit bitching in the comments.
UDC Finally Gets New President: The perennially troubled University of the District of Columbia finally has a new president: Allen Sessoms will begin his tenure Sept. 1, according to an announcement made by school trustees yesterday. Sessoms has served as president of Delaware State University, a historically black university, for five years. While there, he was successful at increasing enrollment and doubling the school’s endowment, says the Post.
Workers Detained at Dulles: Immigration authorities detained 42 Dulles Airport workers yesterday, after discovering that they were all likely illegal Latin American immigrants. Most of the workers were men who were hired as construction workers. Immigrant advocates say they are concerned that DHS has detained the workers without giving them access to legal representation.
