MUSIC: Three Stars favorites Shortstack are back at the Black Cat‘s backstage, with Sons of Guns and Zeke Healey. $10, 9 p.m.
READING: Alexandra Kerry is a filmmaker in her own right, but she’s also written a book about her father’s (Sen. John Kerry) failed bid for the presidency in 2004. From most reviews it seems like the younger Kerry doesn’t bother to make any big conclusions about why her father lost — rather she focuses on the minutiae of enduring a national campaign from the inside. She’ll be at the L Street Borders tonight to read from and sign copies of Notes from the Trail: Presidential Politics from the Inside Out. 6:30 p.m.
JAZZ: Bethesda native Alex Pinto is currently based in L.A., but tonight his band, AP4, will make its debut at Twins Jazz. The group blends modern jazz vocabulary with North Indian Classical music and a 1990s rock aesthetic. 8 p.m. $10.
MUSIC: Up and coming soul singer Green Tea is on the verge of putting out her second album, Choices. Her release party, which will include her performing with her backing band, Soul Food, is tonight at Bohemian Caverns. $20 gets you in, plus a copy of the new CD. 8 p.m.
MOVIE: The Library of Congress Mary Pickford Theater’s schedule still says “July through August,” but there are September dates hidden there at the bottom. Tonight they present the Howard Hawkes-directed Marilyn Monroe/Jane Russell classic, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, plus a Looney Tunes featurette starring Daffy Duck to start. Looking for a last-minute date idea? This is a safe bet. Call (202) 707-5677 to reserve seats. Free, 7 p.m.
SPORTS: Local sports fans will be glued to their sets to check out the Redskins season opener tonight. If this isn’t your thing, stay away from any bar with a television in it. If it is, you could do much worse than head to Nanny O’Briens in Cleveland Park, which consistently serves up great hamburgers, will have $3 Miller Lite specials and half-priced wings during the game, and is raffling off a Redskins jersey. But get there early if you want anything resembling a seat.
