Good morning, D.C., and welcome to another edition of the last workday before the weekend starts, otherwise known as Friday. As far as the headlines go this fine morning, this feels just a little bit like Throw Back Friday. Did you remember to put on your poodle skirt and your saddle shoes? That’s right kids, Jack Abramoff is back in the news, this time because he’s received a reduced prison sentence. The disgraced former lobbyist will serve only four years thanks to his cooperation with federal investigators. Abramoff pleaded guilty in January 2006 on charges of fraud, tax evasion and conspiracy to bribe public officials.
PG County Rules Dog Shootings Good: You’ve got to love the Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Department sometimes, if only because they’re just so willing to stick up for each other’s outrageous behavior, no matter how stupid it makes them look. You’ll of course recall the July incident in which Berwyn Heights Mayor Cheye Calvo’s home was raided in a suspected marijuana bust, and the SWAT team gunned down Calvo’s two family dogs. Calvo was exonerated of being involved in any kind of drug ring within days, but now the PG County Sheriff’s office has concluded that the deputies were justified when they shot and killed the two dogs. Calvo told the Washington Post that neither he nor his mother-in-law had been interviewed to give their side of what happened for the internal review.
Baby’s Father May Have Been Target: There’s more details out now about the horrible fatal shooting of a baby in Suitland on Wednesday. The Examiner reports that the baby’s father may have been targeted by the shooters because he and the baby’s mother witnessed a homicide in D.C. on Sunday night.
Briefly Noted: Two-alarm house fire in Northeast … Ward 4 residents concerned about possible arsonist … Montgomery County school bus aide arrested on sexual abuse charges … Marriott evacuated after transformer explodes.
This Day in DCist: In 2007 we whined about how there’s no real Mexican food in D.C., and in 2006 the city’s voter guides were sent out with the wrong polling places printed on them.
