A new Washington Post-ABC News poll shows that Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is polling slightly better in battleground state Virginia than rival John McCain.
Both nationally and locally in Virginia, McCain and Obama are so close to each other in the polls it can fairly be called a statistical tie. But the results of this new poll do seem to indicate that Obama is fairing better in Virginia than he is nationwide. In Virginia, voters are currently 49 percent for Obama and 46 percent for McCain. Nationally, the numbers are closer to 49 percent for McCain and 47 percent for Obama.
If Obama wins Virginia, he would be the first Democrat since 1964 to take the state. The Post’s analysis of the results shows that as the economy has become the number one issue for Virginia voters this election year, Obama has continued to benefit from their belief that he would manage the economy better than McCain would.
