The Redskins face their second winless team of the season Sunday. Will this matchup have a different outcome?
Eye Candy: That’s what the Detroit defense should look like right now to Zorn and Co. Actually, the nicest thing you can do for the Lions this season is not look at their stats on either side of the ball. They rank 31st in total rushing yards this season and their overall defense is 32nd (somebody has to be last, right?).
The Key Difference: Unlike the Rams’ veteran offensive squad, which boasted proven players at key positions, Detroit’s offense runs like a season of Growing Pains: running back Kevin Smith and wide receiver Calvin Johnson are relatively inexperienced but showed star power last week against Houston (Smith split carries with starting running back Rudi Johnson and averaged 6.1 yards per carry to R. Johnson’s 1.3; C. Johnson’s career high 154 yards receiving led the NFL this week). And, of course, with the change of season comes a change at quarterback for Detroit. Dan Orlovsky took over as starter for an injured John Kitna in Week 6 and has a 72.9 passer rating, two touchdowns, and two interceptions (remember, this is the team that brought you Joey Harrington).
The Team That’s Doing Everything Right: The Redskins set a record Sunday: they have gone 332 pass attempts without an interception, surpassing the Raiders’ record of 281 set in 2001. Clinton Portis still leads the NFL in rushing and Chris Horton has the 3rd most tackles of any rookie this year. Shaun Alexander had only three carries for 8 yards, but hey, at least he adds some prestige to the bench.
