HAPPY HOUR: The Onion in D.C. is hosting a big Society for Beer Enjoyment Happy Hour at Woolly Mammoth. Enjoy free pizza and beer from 6 to 8 p.m., as long as you RSVP to dcpromo@theonion.com.

MUSIC: Local artist Tamara Wellons found herself with a house hit several months back, and now is set to release her album, Life Is. She’s performing at Bohemian Caverns. $20 in advance, 8 p.m.

LECTURE: The Smithsonian’s Resident Associate Program hosts a lecture by Leslie S. Klinger called In Search of Dracula, King of Vampires. Klinger will trace “the evolution of the vampire in popular culture, focusing on Bram Stoker,” using film clips, recordings, books and Stoker’s own notes to make note of the inconsistencies in the Dracula story. $25, 7 p.m., at the S. Dillon Ripley Center.

MUSIC: We’re sure jangly indie-psych/garage/soul outfit Portugal. The Man never thought their Wasilla, Alaska roots would get them anywhere. But considering the events of the current presidential election, we can hardly blame them for trying to milk it by billing themselves that way, even if they have all moved to Portland by now. They’re at the Rock and Roll Hotel with New York’s Earl Greyhound and California Canada’s Wintersleep. $14, 8 p.m.

MOVIE: The AFI Silver‘s got another great noir film in They Live By the Night, director Nicholas Ray’s carefully crafted tale of an escaped convict and the woman who falls for him. As you might imagine, fate doesn’t have a lot good planned for these two. Based on the novel Thieves Like Us by Edward Anderson. 9:15 p.m.
