Happy All Saints’ Day, Washington. Hopefully, you made it through the night with more treats than tricks. We were fairly encouraged by the amount of creative costumes that we saw – in spite of our assumption that we’d see far too many Jokers and Palins. What can we say? We’re proud of you, D.C. SoberRide also seemed like it was quite popular last night, as predicted – trying to hail a cab in Columbia Heights was quite trying.
Unfortunately, some of the news this morning is much more ghastly than waiting for cabs or an overload of “lipstick on a pig” costumes.
> The Post reports that three District employees have been let go after a mentally retarded man – who had been living in squalor for years after being physically disabled in a bus accident – had numerous pleas for help ignored by the Department of Disability Services. “Mr. Johnson,” who had an IQ of 45, is believed to have been trying to get help from DDS since 2001. Even with the help of a social worker since 2006, Johnson was unable to receive even one visit from DDS before he slipped into a diabetic coma and died in February 2007. More DDS workers could be fired, depending on further investigation.
> Local media outlets have begun to pick up on The Sexist’s post about the vandalization of an openly gay MPD officer’s locker.
> For something a little more pleasant: DDOT’s planned streetcar line in Southeast will be slightly extended to include a downtown Anacostia stop.
