For some of you, tomorrow will mark the end of an eight-year nightmare. For others, it may well represent the start of a four-year tragedy. Isn’t it grand how democracy brings us together? We kid. Either way, November 5 may do at least one thing that all Americans can be happy about — give us all a short reprieve from campaign ads, swing states and Joe the Plumber. But for today, revel in the last-minute campaign events and pleas for votes, both in local and national races.

In the national contest, yesterday the Post asked 14 pundits for their predictions — 12 of them are betting on Obama — and today is running a useful breakdown on the candidates’ positions on the main issues for you undecided voters. Closer to home, the Post again considers the rival endorsements for At-Large candidates for the D.C. Council, an issue we hit up last week.

Teen Killed in Bus Shooting: NBC4 reports that a 14-year-old boy was shot and killed after an argument on a bus in Silver Spring on Saturday night. Two other teens were injured in the shooting, which came after an argument broke out between two groups on a RideOn bus. Police are looking for a Hispanic male in his early 20s. The Post has a complete account of the sad details.

City Agencies Spend and Spend and Spend: The Examiner picks up a nice local scoop today by reporting that city agencies have routinely violated city laws limiting spending in recent years. According to documents from the District’s Anti-Deficiency Board, city officials in different agencies incurred 400 violations of spending limits between 2005 and 2007, exceeding their budgets by $1 million 100 times in 2006 and 2007.

FxVA Looks to Raise Bus Fares: File this under something we never knew — Fairfax County subsidizes Metrobus fares to the tune of $44 million a year, giving riders a 25- to 35-cent break on each ride. But that may soon end, reports NBC4. High gas prices and insurance premiums are forcing county officials to consider bringing fees up to the level they are for the rest of us, a move that could go into effect as early as January 4, 2009.
