WAMU says that he did not, opting instead to display special inauguration-themed plates on the presidential limousine, aka The Beast, during Tuesday’s Inaugural Parade. As you can see in the above photo, the plates are blue, and display the numeral ‘1.’
The D.C. Council had sent a letter urging President Obama to put the plates, which famously protest the District’s lack of voting representation in Congress even though its residents pay full federal income taxes, on the limo for the inauguration. For their part, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty and Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton chose not to press the matter. A banner displaying the message “A More Perfect Union Must Include Full Democracy in DC” was visible from the Inaugural Parade route, affixed to the District government’s parade viewing stand in front of the John A. Wilson Building.
WAMU quotes DC Vote executive director Ilir Zherka saying his group will continue to lobby for Obama’s support on the D.C. Voting Rights Act. On Tuesday, DC Vote public affairs director Eugene Dewitt Kinlow told DCist he expects the bill to head for Judiciary Committee markup was early as next week.
