Photo by akkleisGood morning, Washington. Yes, those are snow flakes you see outside your window. No, of course they’re not expected to accumulate into anything resembling a real winter storm. Capital Weather Gang is only calling for a dusting this morning, though it’s looking like we could get 1-2″ tomorrow. There’s a catch, naturally: Tuesday’s snow “is likely to change over to ice and then possibly plain rain creating one sloppy mess here Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.” Blergh. Still, we’re keeping our fingers crossed that we’ll get a visit from Davy DCist sometime this evening or tomorrow morning.
How Long Does it Take the D.C. Government to Build a Parking Garage?: In case you missed Paul Schwartzman’s story in the Sunday Post on the epic fail that has become the parking garage construction project at the Minnesota Avenue Metro station, give it a good look. You don’t want to miss money quotes like, “This project represents the absolute worst in government,” attributed to deputy mayor for planning and economic development Neil Albert. The bottom line? The simple concrete parking lot has already used up an additional 2 years and $3 million, and it’s still not done yet.
Obama Staffers Avoid Burning Down OEOB: Firefighters were called to the Eisenhower Executive Office Building on Sunday due to reports of smoke coming out of the building. As it turned out, somebody had tried to light a fire in a fireplace on the second floor of the building, but the chimney wasn’t working properly and smoke backed up into the building. You gotta hate to be the Obama staffer now forever known as the guy who tried to burn down the OEOB during the first week of the administration. Surprisingly enough, though, D.C. Fire spokesperson Alan Etter told the Post that it’s normally perfectly fine to have fires in the fireplaces inside the building. No one was injured and no damage has been reported. You’ll recall that little over a year ago, an electrical fire next to former Vice President Dick Cheney’s ceremonial office in the building caused some damage.
