BENEFIT: There’s a bigger benefit tonight for Rock and Roll Hotel/DC9 bartender and manager KT Robeson, who is still recovering from back surgery and hasn’t been able to work for some time. There’s a crazy-long list of performers, including Domino Team, Tom McBride and the Whig Party, the Public Good, and Stewart Lupton, plus big name DJs from all over town including Will Eastman, Shannon Stewart, and Nacey and Steve from Nouveau Riche. All proceeds from the night — every $5 cover and 10 percent of the drink sales — will be donated to KT. At the Rock and Roll Hotel, music gets started at 9 p.m.

MUSIC: Chapel Hill, NC’s The Roman Candle is a little bit country, a little more rock and soul. If you wish Ryan Adams had never broken up Whiskeytown and Jeff Tweedy had never kicked Jay Bennett out of Wilco, and you’ll want to be at Jammin’ Java in Vienna tonight when the quintet previews tunes from their upcoming LP, Oh Tall Tree in the Ear. With Taarka. 8 p.m., $10.

LECTURE: Transformer Gallery hosts a talk with recent Science Club interviewee and conservation geneticist, textbook author, and National Zoo population manager Jonathan Ballou. Call (202) 483-1102 to reserve a space, 6 to 8:30 p.m., free.

MUSIC: DJ/Producer/MC Large Professor, the man responsible for the classic track “Looking At The Front Door,” is a special guest at Bohemian Caverns‘s weekly “Sound of the City” party tonight. The Professor will perform vintage material as well as new cuts from his recently released album, Main Source. $12 in advance/$15 at the door, 8 p.m.

LECTURE: Movie buffs may be interested in checking out Giggles and Sniffles: What Makes a Movie Great? at the S. Dillon Ripley Center from 6:45 to 9 p.m. tonight. WaPo film critic Desson Thomson will explore movie-going dynamics “and treat the audience to clips from a host of great movies, both funny and affecting.” This is a two-night series, and will continue next Thursday. Tickets are $40 each; attendance at both sessions is not required.

MUSIC: Ex-locals (The Sounds of) Kaleidoscope will be at the Black Cat‘s backstage in their current incarnation to deliver songs clearly inspired by ’60s pop music but leaning more heavily on experimental riffing and feedback. D.C.’s The Tennis System and Big Gold Belt open. 9 p.m., $8.
