‘Presidential Cupcakes,’ on display Saturday at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, was both a celebration of Barack Obama’s recent Inauguration and a tribute to our 16th President’s recent 200th Birthday. It also happened to be President’s Day Weekend and, um, Valentine’s Day. And who wouldn’t want cupcakes on Valentine’s Day?
Created by artist / baker Zilly Rosen, the best-seen-from-above piece consisted of over 5,600 cupcakes frosted with different colors to represent what would, in digital photography, be pixels (which is how this whole thing was figured out).
It was hard to tell whether the masses begging for cupcakes at the end of the installation were genuine fans of Rosen’s art or just hungry for some sugary goodness and happened to be at the right museum on the right day. Either way, people surrounded the double-portrait throughout the afternoon to catch a glimpse of the unique piece (and, presumably, a piece of the unique treat).
