House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (Md.), a longtime proponent of the D.C. Voting Rights Act, released a statement announcing that the bill should reach the House floor for a vote next week. The bill will be marked-up in the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday.

“Today’s Senate action on the DC House Voting Rights Act is a major breakthrough that moves us closer to righting a 200-year old wrong that is contradictory to our American ideals at best, and at worst, a denial of democracy for 600,000 citizens living in the District of Columbia,” Hoyer said.

“I applaud the leadership of the bill’s Senate sponsors, Senators Lieberman and Hatch, and the commitment of Senate Majority Leader Reid to move it promptly through that chamber. In the House, the Judiciary Committee will mark-up Rep. Norton’s legislation tomorrow, and I expect to bring the bill to a vote on the House floor next week.”

The last time the bill reached the House floor, it passed by a vote of 241 to 177.
