Saturday night from 9 p.m. to midnight, the vacant space beneath Union Row condominiums on 14th Street will be alive with art and music commemorating the life of Harlem renaissance writer Zora Neale Hurston. Why Hurston? The author and folklorist was born in Eatonville, Florida, and the murals will decorate the forthcoming Eatonville restaurant—owned by Andy Shallal of Busboys and Poets. Artist Chanel Compton waitresses at Busboys, and asked Shallal if he knew of any empty buildings where she could throw an art event. Shallal offered up Eatonville, which is still under construction, currently interviewing chefs, and preparing to open in a couple of months.
About 20 visual artists are participating in the event, and began painting their floor-to-ceiling murals on Thursday afternoon. The work varies in style and execution: some pieces channel graffiti and others lean more toward abstraction and realism. Saturday’s opening reception will feature a variety of DJs and bands, including Noon:30, DJ Natty Boom, Cara Fleck, Too Deep, and Jessica Chambliss. Artists include organizer Chanel Compton, as well as familiar faces Decoy and Kelly Towles, among others.
In addition to Saturday’s opening, the space will also be open for viewing on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. At Saturday’s reception, they are asking for a $10 suggested donation. Eatonville is located at 2121 14th St. NW, at the corner of 14th and V Streets.
