Photo by tjunedavisGood morning, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty is preparing to deliver his annual State of the District address this morning (11 a.m. at the Hattie Holmes Senior Wellness Center, 324 Kennedy Street NW) after having abruptly rescheduled it on Tuesday. The speech comes at a time when the mayor has been under fire for accepting lavish trips from foreign governments and not disclosing them, but as WTOP’s Mark Segraves reports, the mayor still just doesn’t care. Check this somewhat stunning mayoral quote, in response to questions from Segraves about whether Fenty will start releasing the details of any future trips beforehand: “I’m not going to tell you,” Fenty said, reiterating that he’ll only disclose travel plans if required to do so by law.
Summer Jobs Get Overhaul: Fenty will surely be more focused this morning on the District’s budget and the relaunch of his controversial summer jobs program, which he announced yesterday, reports the Post. Among the changes being put in place in the hopes of avoiding last year’s $55 million payroll debacle: participants will have to register online and fill out electronic timecards every day. Salaries will also be capped at $33 million for the entire program.
Crime Initiative Aimed at Summer, Too: The Fenty administration had summer on the brain yesterday, as they also announced a new anti-crime bill that they hope will be enacted by the D.C. Council in time for the usual spike in violent crime that comes with the season. The plan would, among other things, increase penalties for felons convicted of possessing firearms and allow for some repeat violent offenders to be jailed before trial. The Washington Times covers the announcement, framing it, as the paper is wont to do, in terms of how conservatives are reacting to the proposal (hint: they like it). The ACLU does offer a quote expressing skepticism that Fenty’s plan will hold up to legal scrutiny.
Briefly Noted: Arne Duncan, Michelle Rhee visit Southwest elementary school together … D.C. attorney general sues CashPoint … Another creepy intruder story reported on the Georgetown campus … More on the story behind the fatal PG County police shooting at a Temple Hills bar.
This Day in DCist: Last year, a group of anti-war protesters held a “freeze-in” at Union Station, and the year before that, the Washington Post’s comics section dumped Mary Worth, Cathy and Broom Hilda.
