Well, this image certainly stands out against the saccharin sweet cherry blossom photos in the DCist pool right now. Kasia Swierczek took a walk around the long abandoned Forest Haven compound in Laurel, Md. on Monday. Be warned, if you plan to click through any of the following links, the history of the asylum and its residents does not make for light reading. Forest Haven, a District-run facility for the mentally disabled since at least the 1950s, much maligned for its treatment of its patients, was closed in 1991 after a federal lawsuit required reform. The Washington Post won a Pulitzer in 2000 for its fairly horrific follow-up on the conditions of the patients who were disbursed, largely to group homes throughout D.C. (A 2005 follow-up to their follow-up is here.) From the looks of Kasia’s image of a record of dental appointments, the asylum has remained frozen in time for nearly 20 years.
