This editor absolutely suffered through numerous hours of today’s NFL Draft to bring you the word that the newest member of the local pigskin team is, well, kinda terrifying. Defensive end Brian Orakpo of the University of Texas, a player that many thought could go in the top six of this year’s draft, fell to the Redskins at number 13 — and the team didn’t even think twice, taking about ten seconds to announce their selection of the fearsome Longhorn pass rusher.
Prior to the start of today’s draft, everyone and their dog was predicting that the Redskins would end up with USC quarterback Mark Sanchez — whether that was at their slot at #13, or via a trade to move up in the draft.
But to the delight of Washington sports bloggers everywhere, Sanchez was snapped up by the New York Jets as Brett Favre’s heir apparent. The Jets pulled the trigger on a trade up to the fifth pick after the Seattle Seahawks had top linebacker Aaron Curry fall into their lap at number four and passed on the touted USC quarterback.
So Washington ended up with Orakpo, who is about as good a player as they could have gotten without trading up. Orakpo will likely push for a starting position from day one — the ‘Skins will be looking to see who will compliment the returning Andre Carter on the opposite end of the line. Judging from the video above, I’d be real concerned right about now if I were any of the Redskins’ other defensive ends.
The best news? The ‘Skins don’t hold another pick until the third round, which will not happen until tomorrow — so all you crazies can go outside and enjoy the rest of the day, knowing that this freak of nature will probably be destroying whatever quarterbacks the NFC East tosses him this year. Man, did you see his bench press? Sheesh.
