MUSIC: Tickets are still available to catch Longwave tonight (read our interview) at the 9:30 Club. They’re opening for Texas’ arena rock pros Blue October. $30, 7 p.m.

CHARITY: As a volunteer member of the board of directors of Street Sense, D.C.’s local homeless newspaper, I can tell you that the organization is really suffering from the recession. Tonight, the first of what will likely be several fund raising events over the next couple of months is being held as the non-profit attempts to gather enough cash to avoid folding altogether. Kindly stop by R.F.D. tonight from 7 to 10 p.m. and do one of the following: pay $15 for a wristband, which gets you entry into a charity concert and access to happy hour prices until 10; pay $10 to get in to the show only; or just pop inside and throw some spare dollar bills into the donation jar on your way elsewhere. Your cash could help keep Street Sense alive. Politicks and White Ford Bronco are both scheduled to play. Facebook here.

READING: Politics and Prose hosts No God But God author Reza Aslan as he reads from and signs copies of his new book, How to Win a Cosmic War: God, Globalization, and the End of the War on Terror. 7 p.m.

SPOKEN WORD: Mothertongue is back at the Black Cat. $8 in the Backstage. 9 p.m.

MOVIE: Get in the mood for tomorrow night’s big Caps v. Rangers game 7 playoff match by heading to the AFI Silver tonight to catch Slap Shot, Paul Newman’s classic hockey comedy. 9:30 p.m.
