Good morning, Washington. The Post has formally declared the last three days a “heat wave.” It was 92 degrees at Dulles yesterday. And the day before that. And the day before that! That is indeed pretty hot. Plus, all three days marked or tied record highs. Today’s the last day of the hot, hot heat, however, as tomorrow marks the beginning of at least four days of potential thunderstorms and lowered temps. No awesome weekend weather next time around? Boo.

Busy Year for Finance Office Investigators: Over at the Examiner, Michael Neibauer runs down all the different investigations spearheaded by the city’s Office of the Chief Financial Officer over the course of fiscal 2008. The context here, of course, is the aftermath of the $50 million, Harriett Walters embezzlement scandal. “The unraveling of the OTR scam led to numerous, unrelated allegations of fraud and abuse across Gandhi’s organization, according to the report. It also spurred a new policy demanding background checks of all longtime staffers, which uncovered at least one employee with a hidden criminal past.”

City Adopts Zipcar-Run Fleet Sharing Service: The District government announced yesterday that it had adopted a new fleet management system called FastFleet, which will by managed by Zipcar. The program is said to be the first of its kind, and is designed to allow the city to maximize the efficiency of its fleet and allow a significant reduction in number of vehicles needed. Nikita Stewart has more in the Post, including this crucial passage: “Gabe Klein, city transportation director, did not attend the event. Klein is the former regional vice president of Zipcar … Mafara Hobson, the mayor’s spokeswoman, wrote in an e-mail that Klein still holds a financial interest in the company but that “the ethics office said the amount wasn’t a significant amount and therefore not a conflict of interest.” Hobson did not disclose the value of Klein’s stake in Zipcar.” Hmm. Sure would be nice if Klein went ahead and disclosed that info himself.

This Day in DCist: In 2008, we took a good look at spring beers, and in 2006, we looked at which D.C. chefs are into cooking sous vide.
