Rapper, producer, and D.C. Ambassador Wale made an appearance on ESPN morning-squawker First Take this week to talk hockey — or as he calls it “professional wrestling, minus the professional wrestling” — and heap some much-deserved praise on Caps star Alexander Ovechkin.

Now, whether Ovechkin is actually “seven-foot-seven,” I’m not sure; but I’m prone to take Wale’s word for it. Wale knows enough to know that Ovechkin is LeBron James on ice, which is more than James knows about it. But Wale should work on his District talking points: Blowing up King James might not tweak NHL fans, but Gilbert and co. would surely rather he didn’t.

This editor took to the Internets to determine who, if anyone, in the musical world is taking up the standard for noted whiner Sidney Crosby. While Ovie’s got rising-star Wale dropping his name and yearning to take pictures next to him, there is a suspicious absence of dope rhymes surrounding the play of the Penguin. It would even appear that he has no sort of musical friends at all!

However, one story might qualify: Pummeler, a Maryland band who wrote a song called “Crosby Sucks,” seems to have given Crosby the attention that he deserves. In the interest of parity, DCist feels it’s important to give consideration to both stars and their homages.
