The heavy rain–two to three inches in the last few hours, with a few more to come–means flash flood warnings for large parts of the region until 11:30 a.m. Firefighters rescued three drivers trapped in their cars in a flooded stretch of Rhode Island Avenue. Adding to the fun, DC Alerts reports that a manhole explosion has forced the closure of Georgia Ave and cleanup of fallen trees has temporarily closed Davenport, Brandywine, and Broad Branch roads. The rain should taper to occasional showers by the afternoon.
The million dollar chauffeur: Mayor Fenty has been flouting D.C. laws that allow only city employees to drive city-owned vehicles by letting his pal drive him around in a city-owned Lincoln Navigator. The driver in question is Keith Lomax, a former substitute teacher who’s received $11 million in contracts since Fenty took office, according to the Post.
More college grads headed this way: The Post reports that the region’s reputation as a recession-proof economy is attracting more and more college graduates. Turns out there’s reason for the optimism about DC, which is adding jobs in health care and government. The unemployment rate here is 6 percent, compared to 9 percent nation-wide.
