Rumor spread wildly last night through the drunkosphere (i.e., Twitter) that the Townhouse Tavern had lost its liquor license. Now, considering that it’s the Townhouse Tavs — the only bar in Dupont Circle to merit the word “scabrous” — the question seemed likely not “whether” but “for what, finally?” Did Redskins fans in the end rise up against that bartender whose phone ringtone is the theme to Dallas? Maybe the progressive interest groups that call the Tavs home mounted a brazen revolution? Or did notorious and mysteriously disappeared former bartender Jodie return to completely turn out the bar’s liquor holdings in the form of free shots, the way he would, oh, any time someone put SWV on the jukebox?
Whatever the offense, a sign posted on the door indicates the Tavs’ license was merely suspended — not revoked — for three days starting on Sunday (for violation of Title 25 of the DC Code and/or Title 23 of DC Municipal Regulations; those titles are pretty broad in covering most of the rules covering alcohol sales, meaning the violation could have been just about anything). While this bar owes me for a digital camera, one fractured rib, and a great deal of lost dignity, I nevertheless greet the news as great that the Townhouse will be open tomorrow and once again abetting the spread of alcoholism throughout the District.
