Photo by afagen. The Nationals are 0 for the last week, and 13-36 for the season. They still like to commit errors — an MLB worst 48 in 49 games — and they still like to throw batting practice: an MLB-worst 5.69 ERA and .285 batting average against are indications of that. But buck up NatsTown, they are technically undefeated in the month of June.
After firing the bullpen twice, and demoting numerous players — including center fielder Lastings Milledge — most people are wondering how long manager Manny Acta can hold onto his job. The fact that he has not been fired yet shows how much the organization likes him, but poor fielding and a poor bullpen are two things that a manager can have the most impact on, and these are the areas where the Nationals are really disappointing. Since the Lerners bought the Nationals, they have never really given any indication that they care about the product on the field. Firing Acta will not turn this season around, but at least it will let the fans know that there are consequences to losing for the people in charge of the team.
Daniel Cabrera
The great Daniel Cabera debacle of 2009 mercifully ended on May 27 when the team designated the “pitcher” for assignment. Cabrera is expected to become a free agent, and the Marlins are rumored to be interested in him. Good luck with that.
Game of the Week
The game of the week is tomorrow — a pitcher’s duel, as the Giants’ Randy Johnson faces Jordan Zimmermann at Nationals Park. Johnson will be looking for his 300th career win. The freakishly-tall lefty, who was certainly one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball at his apex, could become the 24th pitcher in baseball history to achieve this feat — assuming he can silence the potent Nationals offense. Given that pitchers pitch fewer games in the modern era, many speculate that there will be fewer and fewer 300 game winners in the future; the next closest pitcher is Jamie Moyer with 250, and given his advanced age of 46, it is unlikely that he’ll reach this milestone. It’s a rare chance to see baseball history made at Nationals Park.
Briefly Noted: Filming for the new Owen Wilson movie has started in Nationals Park… Elijah Dukes may have to go to jail… Send Lasting Milledge to the All-Star Game… Nats television viewership is up 56% and still almost no one is watching.
Meaningless Statistic of the Week: Jordan Zimmermann is leading the National League with a 5 ratio of strikeouts to walks by a right handed rookie pitcher facing the #8 batter.
