JAZZ: We already previewed this year’s Duke Ellington Jazz Festival, which kicks off officially tomorrow but is hosting a prelude concert tonight featuring pianist Allyn Johnson. The performance, taking place at The Phillips Collection, will also include bassist Herman Burney and flautist Jamal Brown. 5 p.m. Free.
MORE JAZZ: Tonight also marks the end of National Geographic’s excellent Rhythm Road concert series for the season. The free show will feature local Latin ensemble Duende at 6 p.m., and the blues sounds of the Eli Yamin Band at 7:15 p.m. Both are fresh off the road from international tours sponsored by the U.S. State Department and Jazz at Lincoln Center.
MOVIE: Capitol Riverfront kicks off its ’80s outdoor summer movie series tonight with Back to the Future. The movie starts at sundown (circa 8:45 p.m.) in Tingey Plaza, behind the U.S. Department of Transportation building.
MUSIC: If it’s not raining, consider checking out the first concert in this summer’s Sounds in the Square series, the Golden Triangle BID’s annual summer concert series in Farragut Square Park. Of course, if you’re opposed to modern country, you might want to wait until later in the summer. 5:30 p.m. -7:30 p.m., free.
