>> Local Amber Mimz is an up-and-comer. Now based in Brooklyn, the vocalist will be at Bohemian Caverns as a part of the Rhythm n’ Soul series. $10, 8 p.m.
>> Held in conjunction with the Hip-Hop Theater Festival, some of D.C.’s finest hip-hop artists will be Liv celebrating the life and musical legacy of Detroit-born emcee/producer James “J. Dilla” Yancey, who died from complications of Lupus. Slated to appear are Kev Brown, Kaimbr, and Three Stars alum Wayna, among others. Phife from a A Tribe Called Quest and Grap Luva (Pete Rock’s brother) will play host while J. Dilla’s mother (Maureen Yancey) and younger brother (Illa J) will be in attendance. Free (donation to Maureen Yancey Fund suggested), 9 p.m.
Friday:
>> Several prominent acts from the Baltimore/D.C. area will take part in “Neo-Soul Night” at Carter Barron Ampitheater. On deck for the evening are Tamika Jones, Fertile Ground, Wayna, and Deborah Bond. Free (but ticket needed), 7:30 p.m.
Saturday:
>> James Brown, Michael Jackson, and Fela Kuti will be in the mix put together by local favority DJ Dredd and Philly native Rich Medina. They’ll be closing out the Hip-Hop Theater Festival at the Warehouse Loft (411 New York Avenue NE). Free (with RSVP), 10 p.m.
Sunday:
>> It what’s become a summer ritual, the “Rock The Bells” tour will be making a stop at Merriweather Post Pavilion. The list of performers is massive. The Roots, Common, and D.C.’s Tabi Bonney (pictured) are definites for this show. $51-$176, 11 a.m.
>> If you can’t make it out to Columbia for “Rock The Bells,” fear not. DJ ?uestlove will put down his drumsticks after The Roots’ set to be at Liv along with DJ Dummy (Common’s DJ). $10 in advance/$15 at door, 10 p.m.
