Good morning, D.C. Obviously, the headlines this morning all revolve around the death of the legendary Walter Cronkite, who passed away at the age of 92 yesterday. As the local CBS affiliate, WUSA9 has the most comprehensive web view of the iconic newsman, with a video tribute and a career timeline. FishbowlDC offers up reactions and thoughts from various D.C. journalists — but one thing is clear: regardless of the issues and opinions that divide us, Cronkite was that rare breed of public figure who could unite this country in times of sadness, jubilation, and the day-to-day. And that’s the way it is.

In other more local headlines this morning:

>> Don’t forget, the Takoma Metro station will remain closed for most of the day today — until 7 p.m. — in order for NTSB investigators to work unfettered at the scene of the Metro crash. There are shuttle buses running between Silver Spring, Takoma, and Fort Totten.

>> D.C. is honoring its first African-American fire chief, Burton Johnson, by renaming Engine Company 4 at 2531 Sherman Avenue NW in his honor.

>> Speaking of fires, two big ones in the area last night. First: an incredibly sad story, as a five-year old was killed in the Riverdale Park section of Prince George’s County. The fire was deemed as an accident after the boy and his seven-year-old brother were cooking unattended. In the other fire, 65 firefighters struggled to put out a huge blaze at an apartment building in the 5300 block of Colorado Avenue NW — the fire has left two dozen people displaced.
