Morning, Washington. After quite a few weeks without rain, we sure had a doozy of a storm yesterday. The heavy thunderstorm knocked out some traffic signals downtown, which remain out for the time being. Flooding, house fires and lightning strikes completed the destruction, including the golfer we mentioned yesterday who’s injuries are consistent with a “near-strike.” Though even with all that, our D.C. summer has still been “abnormally dry,” so we’re forced to say, keep it coming!

Painful X2 Line to Continue to be Painful: At least for a little while. The Washington Post reports that Metro has delayed the addition of the long, accordion style buses to the X2 line, which were supposed to arrive in the spring. Road construction on the line, which isn’t scheduled to be completed until 2011, make driving the big buses dangerous. The Post lists the many complaints by X2 riders — the overcrowding, the lack of air conditioning or working windows, etc.; Metro says its looking for ways to alleviate these issues in the meantime.

WTOP Talks to Marion Barry About Apologies: The Ward 8 Councilmember has already told reporters that he apologized to the City Council behind closed doors, yet has no plans to do so publicly. WTOP gets some more detail out of Barry, including this little gem, “People don’t believe this, but I wouldn’t hire my mother to a job she wasn’t qualified to do — and I love my mother.” Watch the five-minuted video here.

D.C. Public Library Purges Active Files: In an attempt to clean-out their records, DCPSL accidentally deleted hundreds of active patrons files by accident. If you find your card no longer working, you’ll need to bring an ID to a branch to reactivate your account. Said the DCPSL Director about the mistake, “We learned a lot.”

In Brief: Four killed in helicopter crash in western Maryland … Removal of VA Tech shooter’s files called accidental … WUSA9 pontificates over following cops orders.

This Day in DCist: In 2008 Columbia Heights suffered a string of mid-day robberies; in 2007, Takoma Park voted to impeach President Bush; while in 2006, we discussed the fetishism of Whole Foods.
