- Kastles Win WTT Championship: We’ll have photos and a report from last night’s title-clinching victory by the Washington Kastles over the Springfield Lasers tomorrow.
- Nationals 3, Padres 2: Even we can’t plead innocence from the Austin Kearns hate train — and come on, even the most optimistic of Nats supporters have probably held Kearns up as exhibit 1A in an assessment of the team’s play at some point this summer. That doesn’t mean that we can’t enjoy the moment when he breaks free from the hardball shackles that have held him down for the last few months. Kearns — who had but one RBI between May 8 and yesterday — smoked a ball with two outs in the tenth to push the winning run home. Lost in the Kearns-love: ace John Lannan, who was absolutely outstanding. Lannan allowed only one run over eight innings and even chipped in two hits at the plate, but didn’t get the win after Mike MacDougal blew the save in the ninth (surprisingly, MacDougal’s first official BS as a Nat). But despite Lannan’s fantastic day, all the focus was on the rightfielder who’s now hitting .196. Kearns might not be the best player, but after watching his post-game standup, no one can accuse him of not being invested. More happy news: the Nats have actually won four of their last six.
- Freedom 3, Red Stars 2: Midfielder Allie Long scored the game winner for Washington in the 89th minute, as the Freedom found some potency in the attacking third against Chicago. Offensive firepower was the order of the day: the teams combined for 36 total shots and Red Stars keeper Caroline Jönsson was forced into 11 saves. Abby Wambach scored a brace for the Freedom, but it was Long’s excellent wade through two Red Star defenders which ensured the three points. Washington now sits tied for the final playoff spot with a game in hand.
