>> Duck out of work early and head to Café Atlantico today for free rum tasting between 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. Various rum producers will be pouring complimentary tastes and discussing their products. And stop by later through the weekend for special cocktails and rum-infused food.
>> Don’t neglect to consult our film picks of the week, which includes the well-reviewed District 9 from director Neill Blomkamp, and “Rumble in the Jungle” concert documentary Soul Power.
>> The Rock and Roll Hotel is celebrating its third year anniversary by hosting big blowout local music night, featuring DCist faves Jukebox the Ghost headlining with all new material. Title Tracks, Bellman Barker, Tereu Tereu and John from US Royalty will also be on hand for the party. $12 in advance or $14 at the door, show starts at 9 p.m.
>> Friday’s big-name show is the Warner Theatre’s triple bill of The Pretenders, Cat Power, and Juliette Lewis and the Licks. $59.50, 7:30 p.m.
SATURDAY
>> We could not have had more fun at last year’s Girls Rock! DC camper showcase, so do not hesitate to head down to the 9:30 Club for this year’s show. It’s only $10 and you get to support girls rocking, which by golly, you should. 10:30 a.m.
>> Another solid reason to get up and out of the house on Saturday morning: the American History Museum‘s Carmichael Auditorium celebrates National Inventor’s Month with the awesome inventor we all have to thank for providing what led to hours of entertainment in our youths. Ralph Baer, the man who invented the home video game systems Odyssey and Simon, will be on hand for a free lecture at 11:30 a.m. After the program, visitors will be able to play a variety of classic and contemporary video games.
>> Watch as over 100 artists paint a new mural on football field-sized wall while enjoying music, food and drinks for free during Mural Jam, sponsored by Albus Cavus, D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, and the Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program. 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. at the Rhode Island Shopping Center, right near the Rhode Island Ave. Metro station.
>> Hippies, ho! That big Woodstock 40th anniversary concert is going on at the Sylvan Amphitheater on the National Mall. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
>> Innocence & Arrogance: The Art of Arabella Proffer and Brandi Read opens at Art Whino on Saturday. Their work concerns pop-surrealist and neo-realist portraits of “Punks, Goths, Muses, Models and Royalty.” Come after 6 p.m. to enjoy tunes from DJ Rick Taylor and DJ Sequential unit midnight. >> The Montgomery County Agricultural Fair celebrates its 61st birthday starting this weekend. Nine days of concerts, rides, monster truck rallies, pig races, and a rodeo, oh my! $8 per day, $3 for children. All you can ride wristbands are $25 at the gate, or $20 in advance.
