Good morning, Washington. Today is the first day back to school for D.C. public school students (who now only number 37,000). Across town, college freshman are arriving for orientation (and frantic trips to Bed, Bath & Beyond). It’s back to school time in the District, so while it may still feel like summer vacation outside, the season is drawing to an abrupt close. DCist officially recommends you make a point of getting in those long lunches and frivolous ice cream cones while you still can.

Fenty Boys to Lafayette: Mayor Adrian Fenty’s twin sons, Andrew and Matthew, appear to have started 4th grade at Lafayette Elementary this morning, as the Post reports they were seen being dropped off by their mother, Michelle Fenty, this morning. That suggests the mayor’s sons managed to leapfrog over a large number of children on the waitlist to attend the top performing Ward 3 school. We already knew that the mayor’s children would be enrolled in a public school for the first time this year, but Fenty has stayed mum on the location, and continued to refuse to comment today. The Fenty’s neighborhood school is West Elementary in Ward 4.

Soaring Pepco Bills May Be Related to Faulty Meters: Are you one of the D.C. area Pepco customers who saw their bills go way up, seemingly inexplicably, last winter? Well the Office of the People’s Counsel, the D.C. utility consumer advocate, is blaming part of the problem on faulty meters, the Examiner reports. Pepco, which argued at the time that many of the bills merely reflected a lengthier billing cycle combined with increased consumption, of course vehemently denies the charge.

Briefly Noted: Special swine flu prep for area schools … Cash for Clunkers ends todayMan shot and injured in Northeast … D.C. Police once again rounding up hookers from 5th and K NW.

This Day in DCist: In 2007, we discussed how best to remove D.C. vehicle registration stickers, and in 2006, the local election season was heating up.
