As we watched the funeral procession for the late Sen. Ted Kennedy start yesterday in Boston, crews at Arlington National Cemetery began preparing for the private burial ceremony that will take place on Sunday. The ceremony, which will be attended by 200 people, will see Kennedy laid to rest alongside his two brothers, John and Robert, while a bugler plays taps and a rifles fire a salute. Over 20,000 filed through the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston yesterday to pay their respects to the late senator; more are expected today.

Obama Goes Local With Summer Reading: OK, so this is a few days old, but it’s still news to us. Barack Obama’s brief summer escape to Martha’s Vineyard was short and is fast coming to and end, but he ambitiously traveled with five books — including “The Way Home” by local crime author George Pelecanos. Like him or not, Pelecanos has become something of a local literary luminary, so it’s good to see Obama reading stories that take place right in his backyard.

Kaine Opposes Privatizing Liquor Stores: Why must Democrats hate free enterprise so much? The Examiner reports that Virginia Governor Tim Kaine has come out against a plan proposed by Republican gubernatorial nominee Robert McDonnell to privatize state-run liquor stores to help raise funds for state programs. Kaine argued that private liquor stores would work harder to make a profit, thus leading Virginians to drink more.

Cheater Suffers Public Punishment: We had heard a tip on this a few days ago, and it seems to be true — a Virginia man who cheated on his wife agreed to stand on the side of a road in Tysons Corner with a sign announcing his infidelity. WTOP has the details.

Pearson is Back, Again: NBC4 has the scoop on the never-ending saga of Roy Pearson, the former D.C. judge that sued a dry cleaners for $54 million for losing his pants. Pearson is appealing a wrongful termination suit against the city that went nowhere; apparently he thinks that if he throws enough lawsuits at someone, one is bound to stick.

Briefly Noted: Stolen purse at local Starbucks leads to identity theft of Fed chairman … Two Virginia Tech students found dead in forest … Attack on two transgender people considered a possible hate crime.

This Day in DCist: On this day in 2008, Dan Rather lent his voice to the cause of D.C. voting rights. In 2007, Karl Rove went after some American asses.
