Many of you are probably watching the television coverage of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy’s funeral, where five four living Presidents have joined Kennedy’s family, friends, colleagues and staff to say goodbye to the Lion of the Senate before a grateful nation. Here in Washington, residents and mourners are preparing for the arrival of the Kennedy funeral procession — which will stop at the Capitol to honor Kennedy’s legacy before taking him to his final resting place at Arlington National Cemetery.
The late Senator’s casket will arrive at 3 p.m. at Andrews Air Force Base and depart before 4 p.m., according to the Washington Post. The motorcade will stop at the Capitol for a brief prayer before making its way to Arlington National Cemetery, where Sen. Kennedy will be buried with two of his brothers, John F. and Robert F. Kennedy, under the shadow of the Arlington House in a private ceremony.
Another story in the Washington Post reveals that Sen. Kennedy last visited his family’s historical burial site in June 2008, to observe the anniversary of Robert F. Kennedy’s death. It was brother John who loved the site where the Kennedys have been buried. (The older brother, Joseph, was killed during World War II; his body was never recovered and there is no marker for him at the Arlington House.
After the motorcade passes through the District, mourners may gather on the East Plaza to pay their respects publicly to Sen. Kennedy. Until then, it’s a day for considering his accomplishments, reflecting on a great American family, and listening to the Pogues.
