Don’t even pretend that Marion Barry was your first guess.

Reporter Matt Labash has penned a lengthy, conversational-in-tone profile of D.C.’s “Mayor for Life” and current Ward 8 D.C. Council member. What’s especially intriguing about this article is how choosy Barry typically is when it comes to which reporters and media outlets he decides to talk. Labash got several days worth of access to Barry, including in his home and at his church, something plenty of local beat reporters would never get. Some of the hottest tidbits: Barry appears to have a problem keeping his checking account balanced; Barry showed Labash his gunshot scar/nipple; Barry eats tons of fried foods and still drinks at least some alcohol, despite his recent kidney transplant surgery/supposed recovery; Barry has a urinal next to his bed, courtesy the emergencies that now arise since he had his prostate removed.

If there’s one ‘graph that sums the story up, it’s probably this one:

It’s understandable, perhaps, that a man who is constantly under attack tends toward the defensive. But Barry frequently loses track of his own narrative, contradicts his former public utterances, and shows a less-than-straightforward hold on the truth. Over the entirety of our time together, we incessantly play cat-and-mouse. At various times, he insists he never really had an alcohol or serious drug problem–that his post-Vista trip to Hazelden was a “tactical move” for the upcoming trial. Then later he’ll admit that alcohol is his only real addiction.
