There’s been a lot of hand-wringing on many a D.C. neighborhood blog this summer about the U.S. Postal Service’s plans to shut down many of their branches in an effort to trim costs. Today the USPS announced that it has trimmed its list down to 413 retail offices nationwide, with nine of those located inside the District (that’s down from 13 in the previous list of 677). These are the local post offices still in danger:
*Columbia Heights Finance, 3321 Georgia Ave. NW
*Fort Davis, 3842 Pennsylvania Ave. SE
*LeDroit Park, 416 Florida Ave. NE
*Naval Research Laboratory, 4555 Overlook Ave. SW
*Navy Annex
*Northeast, 1563 Maryland Ave. NE
*Petworth, 4211 9th St. NW
*Randle, 2306 Prout St. SE
*Woodridge, 2211 Rhode Island Ave. NE
There are also two offices targeted in Maryland: the Friendship Heights location at 5330 Wisconsin Ave., and the Silver Spring Center at 8455 Colesville Road. There are no locations on the current list in Northern Virginia.
The USPS won’t make a final decision on these branches until after Oct. 2, 2009.
