FRIDAY

ART: This weekend has so many Art options that it cannot be simply summarized for this post, so make sure to consult the Arts Agenda. I will say that for tonight, I recommend Flashpoint’s reception for Bradley Chriss’s: Visions from the End of the World. The reception is free from 6- 8 p.m., and besides featuring Chriss’s apocalyptic watercolors, it was also feature his performance art group, The Post-NeoAbsurdist Anti-Collective.

MOVIES: Last night marked the beginning of the sixth iteration of the DC Shorts Film Festival, which brings together 100 shorts shown in groups of 10 during the course of the week. Consult the festival website for showtimes and more details.

Art Whino is hosting Flik: International Festival of Moving Images tonight and tomorrow. The Flik festival has moved beyond its start as a showcase of Flash animation from all over the world to a festival of motion pictures ranging from computer generated pieces to experimental filmmaking. Art Whino has vamped up the festival this year to include interactive displays, gallery installations, traditional screenings, and live performances and DJs.

MUSIC: L.A. emcee MURS, also of Current TV, is at the Rock and Roll Hotel. $15 in advance/$18 at the door, 9 p.m.

Head to the 9:30 Club for an early show to catch Norwegian singer-songwriter Sondre Lerche, whose music you might recognize from the film , Dan in Real Life. JBM opens, 6 p.m. doors, $20.

JAZZ: Looks like the weather may be a bit shaky tonight for Jazz in the Garden, but do not fear, you can still get your share of free jazz in tonight. The Airmen of Note, which is the premier jazz ensemble of the U.S. Air Force, kicks off its Jazz Heritage Series at Lisner Auditoriumwith a performance featuring the celebrated New York Voices. 8 p.m.

SATURDAY

ART: Join our own Heather Goss’s Ten Miles Square and the work of Pat Padua and Jennifer Wade in Microscopy at Hounshell (1506 14th Street NW). Reception from 6 – 8 p.m.

Saturday marks the debut of “Can’t Stop Won’t Stop,” a photo exhibit by local photographers who focus on hip-hop in its various forms. Check them out at Dahlak (1771 U Street NW) for free, starting at 5 p.m.

FESTIVALS: Today is the actual festival portion of Arts on Foot, the annual event in Penn Quarter (centered around F Street between 7th and 9th Street NW). This year’s Arts on Foot features an art market with 100 exhibitors, food and wine sampling, and an events stage with live performances and neighborhood showcases. 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The Kennedy Center kicks off its fall season with its annual Open House Arts Festival and 14th Annual Multicultural Children’s Book Festival, which will showcase performances in nearly every space possible from for free, starting at noon and going all day. Highlights include work of L’Arsenal à Musique from Montreal, one of the leaders in the circus movement, as well as American and French street performers. Read our full preview here.

The National Council of Negro Women is hosting the Black Family Reunion Celebration Saturday and Sunday from 12 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the National Mall. The event focuses on celebrating traditions, strengths and cultures of the black family, featuring health screenings and lots of food.

OPERA: For the second installment of Opera in the Outfield, Washington National Opera is hosting a free simulcast of opening night of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville at Nationals Park. In partnership with the American Armed Forces Foundation, WNO will honor America’s troops at the event, with approximately 5,000 military personnel and their families expected to be in attendance. You do not even have to register or RSVP to attend. Stadium concessions will be open. Free, 7 p.m. (the park will be open for “pre-game” activities at 5:30 p.m.)

MUSIC: The Soul Controller’s DJ Jahsonic will be on the Eighteenth Street Lounge’s turntables, $TBA, 10 p.m.

The Black Cat hosts another of its increasingly crucial Second Saturday rock shows on the Backstage tonight. This month, they offer up S PRCSS and Hume. $8, 8 p.m.

Or head outside the District to hear Jamie Foxx indulge his musical side at Merriweather, with Speedy. $42.75 – $89.75, doors 5:30 p.m.

JAZZ: The 19th edition of the Rosslyn Jazz Festival is free from 12:30 p.m. – 7p.m. at Gateway Park (1300 Lee Highway), featuring vocalist Holly Cole, harmonica player Frederic Yonnet, pianist Lafayette Gilchrist, and the Spanish Harlem Orchestra.

SUNDAY

FESTIVAL: The annual Adams Morgan Day Festival, featuring the usual local crafts, food and performers on 18th Street between Florida and Columbia Road N, runs from 12 p.m. – 7 p.m.
