Ubiquitous local rocker Ian Svenonius (Nation of Ulysses, Weird War) and his latest project, Chain and the Gang, and Mary Timony’s newish band, Soft Power, are hitting the Black Cat Backstage together. $10, 9 p.m.
Or if you’re in the mood for some straight ahead jazz, head to the bar at Utopia to hear a talented group of local musicians including bassist Andrew Cox, guitarist Josh Walker, and drummer Dave McDonald play with saxophonist John Kocur . 9 p.m., no cover.
MOVIE: Tonight is the first night of the AFI Silver’s Latin American Film Festival. Starting things off tonight is a screening of I’m Going to Explode, a latter-day remix of Harold and Maude and Pierrot Le Fou, about sympathetic adolescent ennui and misplaced rebellion. 8 p.m., $10.
FOOD/ART: Hyattsville’s Design Studio Art Gallery hosts a happy hour at Posh for a new exhibit. The night also features Posh’s regular Wednesday night karaoke, $5 tapas and drink specials.
READING: Author Donald Dell, of Never Make the First Offer, will speak tonight at Politics and Prose at 7 p.m. Dell was one of the first agents to represent professional athletes, from Jimmy Connors to Michael Jordan. Tonight he will offer his advice on concise, common-sense tips on making deals.
