Photo by dmcliciGood morning, Washington. Columbia Heights residents are still reeling from the death of 9-year-old Oscar Fuentes, who was killed Saturday evening after being shot through the door of his apartment in the 1400 block of Columbia Rd. NW. It’s impossible to make sense of the violent death of a child, but that doesn’t mean people won’t try. The building’s landlord is taking some heat for not repairing the building’s front door in a timely manner. The neighborhood itself is also being dragged through the mud, as discussion turns to whether no amount of national retail chains can really change Columbia Heights. Meanwhile, the Fuentes family told WUSA9 that they believe the shooters were gang members, and that MS-13 maintains a presence inside the building as well.
Graham Agrees with Federal Oversight of Metro: In today’s Examiner, Metro Board Chairman Jim Graham said he supports more federal safety oversight of Metro, as suggested by a pair of bills currently before Congress. It’s unclear still how it would work, but expect to hear lots more about this plan in the next month. ‘A spokesman for the Federal Transit Administration said the working group, led by Transportation Deputy Secretary John Porcari, would soon present plans for transit agency regulation. The approach would be similar to that already used for airlines and commuter trains.’
Arrest Made in Killing of George Rawlings: The Post reported on Sunday that D.C. police have arrested a teenager in connection with the shooting death of 21-year-old George Rawlings. Rawlings was killed near 14th and H Streets NE, as he was trying to board a city bus. The arrest follows the Examiner’s Friday story that implicated Rawlings in the earlier shooting death of Ashton Hunter, the man whose funeral Rawlings attended just before he was killed.
