The year isn’t over yet, but Google has gone ahead and released its Year-End Zeitgeist lists of the most popular searches for 2009. This year, they included top searches by city, and D.C.’s most popular Google search terms are listed below. Most of them, we get. Others, consider us baffled.

  1. fcps blackboard
  2. national harbor
  3. e street cinema
  4. nova community college
  5. wtop news
  6. wmata
  7. nationals baseball
  8. dc restaurant week
  9. washington sports club
  10. leesburg outlets

What’s FCPS Blackboard, you might ask? It’s the (apparently wildly popular) distance learning web site for the Fairfax County Public Schools, which I’ll admit I’d never heard of until I just looked it up. Search Engine Optimization precepts of course now demand that we report on every single thing about this particular web site and how it’s changing the face of FCPS!!! In fact we’re already considering changing the name of this web site to FCPSist.com

We also wonder how the Washington Post feels about not even making the top ten, leaving WTOP the only media outlet to appear on the list. Actually, now that we think about it, the one thing that jumps out at us about this list is that these sites are popular in terms of searches either because the individual people who want to find them use them infrequently, or because people who are looking for them frequently are too lazy or simple-minded to use bookmarks. Sounds like WTOP commenters to us!
