Capitals 3, Lightning 0: The troika of Alexander Ovechkin, Alexander Semin, and Semyon Varlamov all had big games to lead Washington to a 3-0 win in Tampa, a victory which puts the Caps on top of the NHL standings. In his first game back from a two-game suspension, Ovechkin was superb, scoring twice to push his ’09-’10 goal total to 20. After but 22 games, it’s the quickest that he’s ever scored 20 in a season — Ovechkin is currently on pace for 75 67 goals. Semin assisted on both of his countrymate’s tallies for his tenth multiple-point game of the season. Eric Fehr also scored, pusing his point scoring streak to seven games. As smooth as the Caps’ offense is moving at the moment, it’d be foolish to overlook the improvement in Varlamov’s game. The young one earned his second career shutout with 26 saves, including several key stops early on to keep the Lightning off the scoreboard. In light of such a comprehensive performance, DCist contributor Charles Gray and I wondered about the Caps’ biggest concern at the moment. One of the issues we came up with is whether or not the team — so full of offensive talent from top to bottom — defers too much in the impressive shadow of Ovechkin. True or not, that’s a very, very nice problem to have.
