WTOP investigative reporter Mark Segraves is the first to admit that being a radio man has sometimes made him a little too relaxed about his appearance. After being famously called out by former D.C. Mayor Anthony Williams for showing up to press conferences in flip-flops and Hawaiian shirts, Segraves says he’s made an effort over the last couple years to dress more professionally when he’s on the job. Still, DCist occasionally spots him staking out city officials at public events looking, how should we put it, a tad scruffy. He clearly hasn’t shaved in several days, let’s say, or he’s wearing an outfit that might be frowned upon even on Casual Friday. But all that’s about to change now that Segraves is launching his new weekend TV show, News Plus with Mark Segraves on DC50.
“Not only have I ratcheted up my wardrobe,” Segraves said, while stressing that he’s already wearing a tie “at least more than half of the days,” but he’s now forced “to carry make-up every day.” Such is the (perhaps slightly embarrassing) life of the newly minted television man.
That’s not to say that Segraves is a stranger to TV. He spent several years as an investigative producer at WJLA/ABC 7 before moving over to WTOP, but he wasn’t in front of the camera much for that gig. A portion of the filmed material for News Plus, which is set to premiere on Saturday at 5 p.m., will come from his daily comings and goings for WTOP, including the sort of sidewalk confrontations with people like Mayor Adrian Fenty for which he’s known.
The rest of the show looks to be a hodgepodge of serious local news interviews, taped on-air segments from his “Ask the Chief” program, and even occasional visits from local artists and musicians. The show will also re-air on Sundays at 10 a.m.
