Good morning, Washington. Did any of you go to the rally last night at the Kennedy Rec Center? Proponents of same-sex marriage turned out to celebrate what’s expected to be a historic vote by the city council later today. We’ll have more on the rally in a bit. In the meantime you might want to check out the Post’s reflection on the vote as a long-sought milestone in David Catania’s political life.
City Bonuses Raise Eyebrows: The Examiner continues to report a story they broke yesterday concerning $565k worth of bonuses being given to city employees — this despite the city’s gloomy financial situation and a law passed in October restricting the DC’s historically generous bonus policy. Most of the money is going to attorneys working under Peter Nickles, who says that the bonuses are for work done in FY2008, and are required under a union contract (the new contract doesn’t contain a similar obligation). Much of the rest of the money is apparently for signing bonuses. In short: it’s just this one time! That’s Nickles’ apparent position, but Mary Cheh and Vincent Gray aren’t happy with that answer; expect to hear more about this over the coming days.
Speed Cameras Relocating in Montgomery County: Police say that speed cameras have been so effective in areas in Montgomery County that they’re thinking about moving them to other places, reports ABC7. The speed cameras on Quince Orchard Boulevard in Gaithersburg are so efficient that authorities will look to move them somewhere else, while the cameras on Watkins Mill Road still have a curbing effect on traffic — even though they were shut off two months ago. Gaithersburg residents tell ABC7 that they appreciate the fact that traffic has slowed and collisions have decreased. Other Marylanders have proven less enthused. Don’t they know that Big Brother is (sometimes) looking out for them while they’re driving?

This Day In DCist: One year ago the Washington Times tantalized NY/DC travelers with talk of a 2 hour train and the word “Borderstan” became sort of an actual thing, somehow.
