With the Jan. 1 implementation of the District’s 5 cent disposable bag tax looming, Council member Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6) sent out some updates on how area retailers are preparing. The list is a little vague in some places, but the best opportunities to score free reusable bags look to be coming from Giant and Harris Teeter.
Giant is about to launch the most generous bag giveaway of any local retailer: throughout the entire first week of the month, from Jan. 1-7, all D.C. Giant locations will bag every single purchase inside free reusable bags. And that means any size purchase, whether it’s a few items in the Express lane or $300 worth of groceries, according to Giant spokesperson Jamie Miller. The chain estimates the promotion will add up to approximately 250,000 bags given away. Giant will also continue to provide a 5-cent discount for each reusable bag that customers provide.
And over at Harris Teeter, during the entire month of January, customers will get one free reusable bag every time they use their VIC card and spend $20 or more in a single transaction.
Safeway and CVS are also participating in their own reusable bag giveaways, and Target will soon institute a new 5 cent rebate every time customers use their own bags.
