Photo by volcanojwGood morning, Washington, and congratulations on surviving the Great Winter Wind Weekend of ’10! It’s not going to get any warmer during this first full post-holidays week back to work, but we’re reliably told that the mother****ing wind will finally die down by the end of today. It’s still going to be mother****ing cold, though, so bundle up.
On to the headlines!
Zorn Out: As someone who only follows the Redskins in passing, I’ll confess I sort of thought Jim Zorn had already been fired, but apparently that only officially happened early this morning, thanks to a report from WRC/NBC4’s Lindsay Czarniak. A news conference has since been set for 12:30 p.m., and we’ll surely have more on this later today. Who do you think will replace Zorn?
Gil to Meet With Police: It’s an awfully sports-heavy Roundup today, isn’t it? Shortly after embattled Wizards star Gilbert Arenas admitted he used ”bad judgment” in bringing guns inside the Verizon Center, looks like he’s set to meet with the MPD today to discuss the matter. If you’re behind, the Associated Press has a decent recap of what’s happened in this gun-related mishap so far. The Pollin family has also released a statement: “The situation involving an incident in the locker room is troubling to our family, our organization and our fans. We know our fans are frustrated and angry. The fact that guns were brought to the Verizon Center is dangerous and disappointing and showed extremely poor judgment.”
Fatal Accident in Rock Creek: A tragic accident in Rock Creek on Sunday led to the death of a 22-year-old Arlington man. Joshua Kuhlman somehow plunged into the creek’s frigid waters while in his car on Sunday morning, leading to a daring rescue on the part of D.C. fire crews, the Post reports. It appears Kuhlman was trapped in the icy waters for at least several hours before he was discovered, and he later died at a nearby hospital.
Briefly Noted: Arrest made in first D.C. homicide of 2010 … Md. considers tightening mail-order bride laws … Several families displaced after Landover fire … D.C. area men detained in Pakistan deny terror plans.
This Day in DCist: In 2009, the Obama family first arrived in D.C. to settle in prior to the inauguration, and in 2007, it was Maryland that was considering same-sex marriage.
