Photo by michael starghill .Alex Ovechkin was named captain of the Washington Capitals on Tuesday, and the team celebrated the occasion with a 4-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens.
“I’m gonna do my best…I have a ‘C’ on my heart,” Ovie said.
It’s hard to argue with the team’s decision to give him the captaincy. Ovechkin’s got more hardware than Home Depot and, as the Caps press release reminded us, regularly attends other sporting events, donates tickets to local underprivileged children and soldiers and gave D.C. its first major professional sports MVP in 25 years.
Coach Bruce Boudreau said when he announced the decision to the team, the group got up and cheered. When Boudreau talked to Ovie several days ago, the new skipper was already thinking about the team instead of himself.
“He said, ‘I would accept the responsibility, but only if my teammates want me to,'” Boudreau told the media.
There is, however, one hole in Ovechkin’s armor. While Boudreau emphasized that Ovie’s taking care of business on the ice, he also mentioned previous captain Chris Clark and his wife were organizers, with Kim Clark serving as point person for the players’ wives. Boudreau said they’ll have another player and that player’s wife take over those responsibilities.
“I can’t picture Alex getting on the phone and saying, ‘Okay, listen, we all got to be at dinner at this person’s house tonight,'” Boudreau said. “It just isn’t gonna happen.”
