D.C. Taxicab Commission Not Doing So Hot: The Examiner reports that the D.C. Taxicab Commission, which is charged with regulating the city’s taxicabs, has not met in over eight months, leaving local cabbies in the lurch. At a hearing before the D.C. Council yesterday, cabbies complained that new metered fares are too low, but if the commission does not meet there is nothing that can be done to raise them. They blamed Mayor Adrian Fenty for micromanaging the troubled commission, which is still reeling in the wake of last year’s bribery scandal that ensnared Council member Jim Graham’s (D-Ward 1) former chief of staff.
D.C. Office Rents May Soon Exceed NYC’s: According to WTOP, office rents in the District are fast approaching and may soon exceed those in New York City, making our quaint little town home to the country’s most expensive office real estate. While rents in New York have dropped about 20 percent, they have only declined by 3 percent in the District, product of an expanding federal government and contractors moving into the area. If and when we surpass New York, it may not be a long lasting victory, though — new office space set to open will likely depress the local market.

This Day in DCist: On this day in 2009, the National Gallery acquired Shepared Fairey’s famous portrait of then candidate Obama and Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Ut.) decided he’d rather sleep in his office than rent an apartment in the city. In 2008, Joe Gibbs resigned as coach of the Redskins and Abe Pollin was forced to give the D.C. Council a suite of its own in the Verizon Center.
