Every Sunday afternoon, I usually end up with a bunch of links that either didn’t have the juice or specifics to run on their own, or simply don’t merit much commentary outside of the facts presented. Often times, these stories melt together into a blur of little factoids that I barely remember come Monday morning. I find this annoying. Here’s an attempt to rectify the situation.

This weekend: let’s connect Washington Wizards forward Antawn Jamison to an evaluation of taxi cab reform and Mayor Fenty’s administration, in six easy, Kevin Bacon-less steps!

  1. Antawn Jamison wants you to know that, as long as he’s the captain of the Washington Wizards, he’s going to try really, really hard “to make this one of the most respectable organizations in the league.”

  2. Ryan Zimmerman is also a franchise leader for a Washington sports team — and the Nats third baseman doesn’t care much for the local transit options, according to his recent profile in ESPN the Magazine:

Zimmerman has never ridden the Metro, Washington’s subway system, and says that at this point, it’s a source of pride to see how long he can go before riding.

  3. Apathy towards the system is one issue, but passenger safety is priority number one for Metro. Not that you’d know it from this story: three women — who couldn’t exit a malfunctioning train before the train’s doors closed — proceeded to be trapped inside as the train rolled through Federal Center, L’Enfant Plaza, Smithsonian and finally, Metro Center, where they finally caught a Metro employee’s attention and got off. During the ride, the women were reduced to “pushing on the doors and screaming” after pressing the red emergency button and cell phone calls to 911 both failed.
  4. Speaking of people who are, at least figuratively, frantically pushing a red emergency button: how about the owners of Love Nightclub? The mega-club has been closed indefinitely by the Alcohol Beverage Regulation Administration due to a flurry of violence over the holidays.
  5. Of course, random violence isn’t limited to clubs: last night on the 1700 block of T Street NW, a taxi driver was shot in the jaw. Police are still investigating most every other detail of the incident. The block was shut down to traffic until the early morning; the taxi was double-parked when the driver was shot.
  6. While we’re talking taxis: WaPo metro columnist Robert McCartney goes fishing for parallels between the Mayoral reign of Adrian Fenty and the taxi reforms his administration successfully fostered last year: “In many ways, Fenty’s taxi reforms are emblematic of how the mayor does business generally.”
