In happy news for your Friday morning, D.C. Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee and fiancee Kevin Johnson have set a wedding date, reports the Reliable Source. The two longtime lovers will be wed on September 4, but have yet to pick a location. D.C. or Sacramento; what say you, commentariat?

Shock Follows Catoe Resignation: Yesterday’s surprise announcement that Metro chief John Catoe was resigning came as a surprise to everyone, notably our own Sommer Mathis, who just the night prior had sat down with the man for a blogger roundtable. Sure, the guy seems a little flustered with all the criticism, but nary a mention of leaving was made. The Post’s editorial board is none too happy with the decision, basically calling out Catoe for leaving Metro hanging at such a tough time. The Examiner wonders what’s next. Council member and Metro board member Jim Graham (D-Ward 1) did sound a note of optimism, saying, “When one door closes, another opens.” Strange choice of words, considering that when one door closes on Metro, the whole train pulls away and you’re left waiting 28 minutes for the next one.

Report Uncovers Overtime Abuse in blah blah blah: Fraud? Excessive overtime? The District government? No way! The Examiner reports that an internal audit has found that D.C. garbage workers racked up hundreds of thousands of dollars in overtime pay through “blatant time and attendance fraud.” And to add insult to injury, the report, which only covers 2009, is said to expose practices dating back to 2002. Catoe may have caught us by surprise, but this doesn’t.

D.C. Eyed for Terror Trial: Via WTOP, the AP is reporting that D.C. might serve as the location for the trial of Riduan Isamuddin, who is suspected of masterminded the 2002 terrorist bombing of a Bali nightclub in which 202 people died. Isamuddin is currently being held at the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, which President Obama has promised to close. We wonder how loud the congressional NIMBY grandstanding will be once they hear of this.

Briefly Noted: McDonnell plans low-key inauguration … Bishop Harry Jackson plans appeal of same-sex marriage court decision … UVa graduate student killed in Haiti quake.

This Day in DCist: On this day in 2009, a new shuttle to H Street NE kicked off and MPD published its gun registration guidelines. In 2008, the mayor’s Citywide Call Center changed its number to 311 and the fight over school closures heated up.
