Bio Ritmo

With a city as international as the District, one expects this diversity to be reflected in the local music scene. But D.C. has never developed a reputation as a world music haven, instead being known for more home grown aesthetics like go-go and hardcore. Slowly but surely, that seems to be changing. With a plethora of Latin and African venues to choose from, and the fertile music scenes of Adams Morgan and U Street, there are now plenty of options for fans of world music, and the choices are only increasing. A listener need not seek out underground venues to hear a wider range of music, it’s all readily available.

Fans of the global groove should take note of a show taking place on Saturday at the Rock & Roll Hotel. The triple bill of Bio Ritmo, The Funk Ark, and Cheick Hamala Diabate will bring together the sounds of West Africa and Latin America for a night that is sure to bring smiles to faces, and feet to the dance floor.

“I think the energy of these three bands and the music they bring will no doubt create an unstoppable energy that will force you to move,” said trumpeter Joe Herrera, in a recent interview with DCist.

Herrera, who is a familiar face on the local scene, playing in a wide range of bands, is a member of both Cheick Hamala Diabate’s group and The Funk Ark. He also played a central role in assembling the lineup at the request of the headliner, Bio Ritmo.
